Discussion on "Maybe we go skating"
1. What were the values of the two groups?
- Japanese girls were cooperative. We don't like isolation. The standing nail gets hammered.
- Japanese girls' value is harmony with other people.
2. What was the conflict?
- They did not try to understand each other's values.
3. Were these girls' values similar to your own?
- Yes and no: When I talk with friends it is yes but in class we debate with others.
- In the same situation it is yes because especially in Japanese we have fellow feeling.
Hofstede's 5 Dimensions:
1. Power Distance:
Should teachers’ authorities be challenged?
- Yes. Because if they make a mistake (time, stereotpye) we have to change the worng to the right.
- Sometimes yes and sometimes no. In the case of the stereotype, we say you are wrong because we are not sure that "all Japanese like sushi" so we say I think you are wrong softly. In the other kind of stituation, if I have time we do not say you are wrong but if we are in a hurry we tell the teacher "I have no time, we have class by 12."
2. Individualism:
Should all students be treated the same?
- We think yes and no. Because in complusory education it is yes but in another education, for example, high school and university it is no.
- Alm,ost the same but in elementary school sometimes 習熟度別学習 is good. For example once a week, and after school.
3. Masculinity:
Should fighting among kinds be tolerated?
4. Unvertainty Avoidance:
Can teachers say, “I don’t know”?
5. Long-term Orientation
Which do you agree with most?
Marriage is for love.
Marriage is for starting a new family and contributing to your own family.

At first , I chose C and considered why I did so. Then I realized that I have a broad tendency to prefer ambiguous options to extreme ones and this is my value. Now my comprehension level turned into B !
It's easy for me to understand the meaning of the abstract words if there are a lot of examples on which I can project my experience. Without them I would be lost.
So far I think I understand at the
B level.The explanations of value was comparatively easy, but the dimensions of power values was difficulty for me, especially the concept of large and short.I could not understand the real meaning and differences of those two terms.
I think I can understand value in B level. Though I can't sometimes recognize value in different countries such as how to show their ideas, it is natural that there are many kinds of value around the world. We can accept the differences in value. I can say what is value easily, but I think value has a lot of meaning and insist on one meaning. Thus, I chose B .
I think I understand at the B or C level.The values are not only one definitely.It has some meaning.So,
it's naturally different countries have different colutures and values.We have to aim to accept the differences.
last week, I couldn't attend the class. I'm sorry I was abesent the class. So, I can't answe the question. I'm very sorry.
I understand at the B level. I could learn that value is invisible, and it's one of the culture. I think understanding other countrie's value often makes us confused because we can't see that. So people need to think, discuss, and try to learn each other. And to me, the difinition of value is little difficult in English. Maybe it's not easy theme even in Japanese, though.
I chose B level.I could understand that people have each values,and we have to know other value to talk with other.But, I couldn't understand Power distance and Individualism.So,in late of class,I understand in C level.
I think I understood at the B level.I could understand that the values have broad tendencies and that have a plus and minus side.
However,understanding the Power Distance is a little difficult for me.In explanation,various countries had different distance.But I think various countries have various cultures,ideas or politics.So I think the Power Distance can't apply to various countries.
I can understand value in B level,I think.There are many countries and many cultures.Sometimes I'm surprized at different culture,but it's fun to me because it's learning and understanding about world. It tells me world is so wide.
So I want to enjoy this class much more!
