I think Japanese girls' values were to agree with a person. However, Duch students' values were to say own opinion.
Japanese don't say own opinion because we are afraid of conflict. We think thoughts of the other party, and almost agree with another person. So, they couldn't real communication. That is why they conflicted, I think.

Japanese:respect for acting and making decisions by groups, not individuals.
Hollander:respect for the individual opinion.
It took much time for Japanese to decide the things. Because they had to discuss in groups and arrange their opinions into the one.Their reactions were very slow and vague. And whenever the Hollander ask the Japanese about their opinions, they never be able to get clear answers. Those attitudes made them very irritated.

The Japanese girls place a high value on being in the group , acting in harmony with other people(both group members and non-group members)and avoiding shame. When the Dutch students asked them to go ice skating ,they didn't make a clear answer. One reason is that they couldn't make decision individually secondly, they didn't want to disgust the Dutch students by giving them refusal and lastly ,they were afraid of trying a new thing and feeling embarrassed. On the other hand, the Dutch students value individualism.
In conclusion, I assume both sides didn't understand each other's values. Japanese girls must have felt awkward with Dutch students' sociability and the Dutch students must've felt Japanese were exclusive. Both sides should have tried to understand each other's values.

I think Dutch students' value is to insist on each opinion and think it important to say each opinion clearly. On the other hand, Japanese such as girls' value is to cooperate with other people and not to say opinions directly. In fact, Japanese tend to make themself agreeable to others. So, between Dutch students and Japanese girls conflict with each value. Without each acceptance, they will not agree with each other.

First, the values of the Japanese girls were not to have their own opinion. So, they never say their feeling clearly. And, they think it is shame that they do something they have never done.
On the other hand, the values of the Dutch were to say their own opinion clearly. And, they don't think it is shame that they do something they have never done.
Like this, the Dutch couldn't understand that the Japanese girls wouldn't go ice skating at first, and they talked each other in Japanese.

I think Japanese girl's value is cooperative. Then,Dutch students' value is individualism and to have own opinion.
Usually,Japanese hate isolation and follow majority. As a result, we tend to avoid saying own opinion. But, Dutch students wanted know each opinion of Japanese.
They have different thinking for values. So, they conflicted.

I think Japanese girls' values were cooperation. They were afraid of difference of opinion.Dutch students' values were individual. It is right for them to say own opinion.
Japanese girls were poor at saying own opinion because they don't like to be denied. But Dutch student couldn't understand their thought. So,they conflicted.

When I tried to write this comment, I felt that I was really Japanese girl. Because I read other student's comments before writing. I think the difference of values between Japanese girls and Duch students is how we feel about being diffrent from others. Japanese might say, "Not so good." And recently we sometimes call such a person KY. But Duch students might say, "That's OK. No problem." I think this was why they conflicted.

I think this is the conflict between individuality and cooperation. The former is the values of the Dutch, and the latter is Japanese girls' values.
For Dutch students,it is important to have own opinion and insist on that clealy, however, Japanese girls tend to agree to other's openion even if they have own opinion. Maybe, they afraid of to be denied,I think.

Japanese girls are always afraid of loneliness. In Japan, strange to say,who have different point (ex,opinion, attitude, behavior, and so on)will be lonesome.Japanese girls tend to gather with someone, and if there is a girl who is not belongs to any group, they despite the girl.

But Dutch students is different. They think a great deal of saying own opinion clealy. So different point is not ashamed.

匿名 さんのコメント...

I think the Japanese girls'value is not making opinion as an individual, but as a group.
Dutch students'values is making opinion as an individual.
The personal opinion can include personal feeling, idea. But the group opinion can't include,I think. That is,these two different opinion's forms caused a conflict,I think.

I think Japanese girls are scare to do something with unknown people to her.Especially, there is strange to her.
